Journaling for a healthy and creative mind

I started journaling when I was 12 years old, and I've been doing it most days ever since. It's become such a natural part of my routine that I never really thought much of it. But now that I'm realizing that not everyone journals, I'm appreciating the benefits of my habit even more.

Recently, I've started to integrate painting and drawing and doodling into my journal. It feels so freeing to be able to express myself in both words and images.

I journal for a variety of reasons. It helps me to process my thoughts and emotions, to create space for myself in my busy life, and to empty my mind before bed. I can only journal when I'm alone, but that's part of what makes it so special. It's a time for me to reflect on my day and to connect with myself.

If you're not already journaling, I highly recommend it. It's a simple habit that can have a profound impact on your life. It helps keep a healthy mind and it boosts creativity.

Here are some of the benefits of daily journaling:

  • Helps to process thoughts and emotions - helps clarify how you feel

  • Improves mood and mental well-being

  • Boosts creativity in a fun way — there is less pressure with whatever you create as is in the form of a journal

  • Helps to learn and grow as we reflect on events and relationships

  • Provides a record of your thoughts and experiences - it’s quite satisfying and interesting to look back

Images of my journal. Some pages are just text and others paintings.

I recently started combining writing in my journal with doodling and painting on the same page, often overlapping. I am discovering a new interest in blending the two, as it allows me to express myself on another level. It allows for more nuances.

My recommendations on how to start journaling:

  1. Find a time and place where you can journal undisturbed.

  2. Choose a journal or notebook that you love.

  3. Start by writing whatever comes to mind. Don't worry about grammar or spelling.

  4. Be honest with yourself. It’s the one place where you can express yourself without judgment.

  5. Journal as often as you can. Even a few minutes each day can make a difference.

  6. You might feel silly the first few time. This is the case when you start anything new so don’t worry and don’t stop!

If you're new to journaling, don't be afraid to experiment. Find what works best for you and stick with it. You have nothing to lose!
